Traveling groceries
One of my favorite things to do in other countries is to wander through grocery stores. You can tell a lot about populations by their essentials - are there a lot of pre-packaged goods or mostly basic ingredients? Here's my conclusions about Dubliners so far:
- They use a lot of soup mixes & packet sauces
- They're not so fond of anything beyond basic fruits & veggies. Salads aren't as much of an art form as they are just taking up room on a plate.
- Apparently they like some good bread because the small-ish grocery store had La Brea bakery bread... it wandered a bit far from home, eh?
- Ireland is a population of chocoholics. The bins of snacks at the Dublin office are packed with chocolate, and entire aisles in the stores are dedicated to packaging Crunchies and Aero bars in different forms.
But when there are pubs every 30 feet and a pint of Guinness has 210 calories, why bother with actual food?
Except for the chocolate. That's not negotiable.
