Lollipops a-flame

Hank’s birthday was this past weekend (August is definitely the event-filled month). We had a nice dinner at the Cuban restaurant nearby our house, then a few of us came back for… of course… cake! I made a devils food cake with light whipped chocolate buttercream icing from The Cake Bible – it’s been such a great book. Everything I’ve cooked from there has been just wonderful. The decorations turned out really well, too. I did an experiment and coated the sides of the cake in toasted cake crumbs leftover from trimming the tops of the cakes – it tasted great! And for the candles, I took giant marshmallows, dipped the tops in chocolate and pressed the candles into them… like chocolatey-marshmallowy lollipops with flammable sticks! I wish I’d taken a photo, but well, these things tend to be forgotten when there’s cake involved.
